This study analyzes the translation of hadith into the Malay language, focusing on the differences between textual and contextual approaches in understanding implicit meanings. Hadith translation often faces challenges in ensuring accurate meaning transfer, particularly when dealing with implicit meanings that cannot be adequately explained through a literal approach. Although previous studies have mainly focused on translation in general, there remains a gap in examining the role of rhetorical elements in shaping the understanding of implicit meanings in hadith. This study aims to evaluate whether the textual approach is sufficient for understanding the implicit meanings, or whether mastery of rhetorical elements and contextual factors is necessary to achieve a more accurate interpretation. The study adopts a qualitative approach based on content analysis of selected hadiths. The findings indicate that a purely textual approach is insufficient and may compromise the intended meaning of hadith when implicit meanings are overlooked. In contrast, the contextual approach, which takes into account situational background, communicative purpose, and rhetorical elements, is more effective in conveying the message of hadith in a more accurate, in-depth, and comprehensive manner. The study recommends the integration of contextual approaches to enhance the quality of hadith translation into the Malay language.
